What are RFID Tags/Labels?
RFID (Radio-frequency identification) is a technology that incorporates the use of radio waves to identify and track an object.
This type of tracking system typically makes use of a microchip which stores information along with a serial number so it’s identifiable. A chip is attached to an antenna that will transmit and receive signals so the information can be seen on a reading device. The combination of the chip and antenna is called an RFID Tag.
There are two types of RFID tags available to purchase, either an active or passive tag. An active tag will have its own power source, for example, a battery. Whereas a passive tag relies on an RFID reading device to scan to learn of the information for that item. There are advantages to using either dependent on your preference.
The technology from a passive RFID Tag can also be formed into an RFID label. These labels can be made from a variety of materials or differ in size and are usually applied to a physical asset that needs to be tracked.
RFID labels are key components for our asset management solution Asset-i, a customisable asset management software that keeps track of your assets, so you can keep an eye on your business.
What are their benefits of using RFID technology with Asset-i?
Using RFID technology will provide a number of benefits. Firstly, saying goodbye to the unreliable manual data collection process. You will see fewer administrative errors and immediate speed gains.
Most RFID tags regardless of the supplier can be reused a number of times so you won’t need to continually invest to maintain maximising the use of the product.
With Asset-I, having a digital asset tracking solution allows you to identify where any item is anywhere, anytime, with a mobile device. View assets by type, group or location. Schedule configurable reports to be generated and emailed.
Asset-i can automatically summarise the information by each individual location where exceptions can be identified and dealt with instantly for fast and easy auditing.
Full optimisation of your assets delivers immediate cost-saving benefits from time saved. This in turn leads to more accurate information and bottom-line profitability.
Looking for further information on RFID?
One of our partners Zebra has their own online podcast called ‘Your Edge’ and back in August, they released an episode asking RFID expert Chris Schaefer exactly what RFID is and more. According to their article, ‘not a day goes by without someone calling him to ask’:
- What is RFID tracking (or RFID locationing)? How does RFID work, exactly?
- Is RFID meant to replace barcoded track and trace solutions? Where is RFID used most often?
- How can RFID be used within my business, specifically?
- What is the difference between RFID and NFC? Or Bluetooth® Low Energy? Or Ultrawideband (UWB)?
- What is the difference between active and passive RFID? What is the frequency range of RFID?
- How does RAIN RFID compare to other RFID technologies from a cost, quality and complexity perspective?
- What is the return on investment (ROI) for RFID?
And these are just the most commonly asked questions.
It an informative piece and it’s a worthwhile listen to anyone wanting to find out more about RFID and its different varieties.
